Cherishing the Bond with a Senior Pet
Some photography sessions stick with you, and this senior pet session was one of them. On February 5th, I met Claire and her sweet senior dog, Biggie, at Viles Arboretum for a session that was as heartwarming as it was freezing. And when I say freezing, I mean 16 degrees with a biting wind kind of freezing.
We were all bundled up, but Biggie, at 16 years old, needed a little extra love to stay warm. These moments reminded me why senior pet photography is so meaningful—it’s about preserving the bond you’ve built over a lifetime.
Why Book a Senior Pet Photography Session?
Senior pet sessions are perfect for:
- Celebrating the life and legacy of your pet
- Capturing the unique bond you share
- Creating timeless keepsakes as your pet enters their later years
Claire chose this session to honor Biggie, who had been with her since he was just three months old. Now mostly deaf and blind, Biggie's senior years are a time for extra cuddles and care.
Meeting an Old Friend
Claire initially found me through Google while searching for a pet photographer. What started as a straightforward booking turned into a small-world moment. When we met in the parking lot, I realized we had met before—Claire was the day-of coordinator for a wedding I photographed over the summer. Seeing her again, this time with Biggie, made the session even more special.
Choosing the Perfect Pet Photography Backdrop
Viles Arboretum was the ideal setting for this senior pet session because:
- It has easy-to-navigate trails for pets of all ages
- The breathtaking, scenic backdrops are close together
- There is beautiful natural lighting, especially at sunset
Despite the frigid temperature, the arboretum offered us picturesque spots without requiring Biggie to walk too far.
Navigating the Challenges of a Winter Pet Photo Session
Photographing a senior pet in 16-degree weather came with its challenges. The cold was biting, and keeping Biggie comfortable was our top priority. We took frequent breaks between shots, bundling him up in Claire’s arms to warm him up. His little body shivered in the frosty air, but those snuggle breaks turned into some of my favorite moments from the day.
Since Biggie is deaf and mostly blind, getting his attention required some creativity. Claire stood behind me, waving and moving around to try to catch his limited vision. It was a team effort, and every little head tilt or glance we managed to capture felt like a small victory.
And then, there were my fingers—freezing every time I had to remove my gloves to adjust the camera. It’s the kind of cold that bites through your skin, but when you’re capturing something as special as this, it’s always worth it.
Editing Style That Brought the Session to Life
The final images needed to reflect both the warmth of their relationship and the reality of the winter day. The shots taken during golden hour glowed with rich, warm tones, giving the photos a comforting feel despite the cold. As the sun dipped and blue hour set in, the tones shifted—cool blues and soft shadows captured the crispness of the winter air.
Together, the warm and cool tones worked perfectly to tell the story of that day: the love that warmed them both, even in the freezing cold.
Capturing Heartwarming Moments
Some moments just make your heart swell, like Claire holding Biggie close between locations, whispering softly to him. Biggie simply sitting in the snow, content to be near his person, his white face standing out against the winter backdrop. And then there was the sunset—those final few minutes of golden light filtering through the trees, wrapping them both in a warm glow before blue hour took over and the world turned cool and quiet.
Those in-between moments, the ones you can’t plan for, often end up being the most beautiful.
Balancing Posed and Candid Pet Photography
Senior pet sessions often lean naturally into candid photography, and Biggie’s session was no different. We’d place him gently on the ground and let him settle in—sometimes he’d just sit quietly, other times he’d give a little sniff around. Claire would kneel beside him, offering gentle reassurance and warmth.
While we did try for a few posed shots, the real magic came in those candid interactions—the gentle pats, the soft smiles, the way Biggie leaned into Claire’s touch. The final gallery reflects all of that: a bond built on years of love and trust.
