Family portraits are more than just beautiful pictures for your wall or holiday card.
As a Maine-based family photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing so many incredible moments between parents, kids, siblings, and even pets. And over the years, I’ve learned that the best family photos don’t come from stiff poses or forced smiles. They come from real, joyful interactions.
Whether you're booking your first family session or refreshing your yearly tradition, I’m sharing my favorite tips to help you create portraits that feel personal, natural, and timeless.
1. Choose the Right Time of Day (and Season) for the Best Light
In photography, lighting makes a world of difference. The soft, golden light about an hour after sunrise or before sunset (known as “golden hour”) is especially flattering for family portraits. It wraps everyone in a warm glow and adds a dreamy, natural touch to outdoor images.
In Maine, each season offers something special. Fall brings colorful leaves and cozy vibes, while summer is perfect for beach or coastal sessions. Spring adds fresh blooms and gentle light, and even a winter shoot can be magical with snow-dusted landscapes. We’ll work together to pick the time and season that reflects your family’s energy best.
2. Coordinate Outfits Without Overmatching
Gone are the days of everyone wearing the exact same white shirt and jeans. The goal now is harmony, not uniformity. I recommend choosing a soft, cohesive color palette (think earthy neutrals, soft blues, warm tones) and letting each family member express themselves within that theme. Textures like knits, linens, or subtle patterns can add depth without stealing the spotlight.
Need outfit inspiration? I’m always happy to help you plan what to wear, and I even have a few style boards I can send your way.
3. Let the Kids Be Kids
Some of my favorite images come from the in-between moments: a toddler running toward a parent for a hug, a sibling whispering a secret, or a giggle that turns into a belly laugh. I always build space into our sessions for play, snuggles, and spontaneity. When kids feel free to be themselves, their joy shines through the lens.
There’s no pressure for “perfect” behavior. I’ll guide gently when needed, but I also encourage you to relax and enjoy the time together. That ease shows up in the final photos in the best possible way.
4. Bring Meaningful Props or Location Ideas
Whether it’s a favorite beach where your family spends summer weekends or a quiet field near your home, choosing a location with meaning can add depth to your portraits. Props can work beautifully too: a quilt for sitting, a basket of books, a picnic setup, or even a beloved pet.
That said, less is often more. We’ll keep the focus on your family’s connection and only add elements that enhance your story.
5. Be Present and Trust the Process
Family sessions are a time to connect, not perform. The best thing you can do is show up ready to laugh, cuddle, and be in the moment with your loved ones. I’ll take care of the lighting, posing, and guiding — you just bring your love and let the magic happen.
Worried about feeling awkward in front of the camera? You’re not alone. I work hard to make every session feel easy and encouraging, especially for parents who are usually the ones behind the lens. You deserve to be in the frame, too.
Let’s Create Something You’ll Treasure Forever
Family photography is one of the most meaningful ways to preserve the moments that matter most. Whether your kids are toddlers or teens, or you're welcoming a new addition soon, every season of family life deserves to be remembered with love.
If you're in Maine and looking for a relaxed, heartfelt family photography experience, I’d be honored to be a part of your story.
