There are certain Maine wedding venues where, as a photographer, I already know where I'm heading when I arrive because I've learned exactly how the light moves across the property.
The Barn at Loon Cove in Skowhegan, Maine is one of those venues for me.
I've photographed two weddings at The Barn at Loon Cove, and what stands out to me isn't just one pretty photo location. It's how much variety the property offers, how thoughtfully it continues to be updated.
So, if you're considering The Barn at Loon Cove for your Maine wedding, here's what I love about photographing weddings here.
Let's Talk About the Light
Photographers are constantly paying attention to light.
Where is the sun? Where will it be in two hours? Is it creating harsh shadows? Can I find open shade? What will the background look like from this direction?
Loon Cove has a few staple locations that I know I can turn to throughout a wedding day.
One of my favorites is the tree line beside the house.
During the middle of the day, when the sun is high and bright, the trees filter that light beautifully. We're still getting bright images, but with the softness I want for my true-to-color editing style.
Later in the day, the sun starts filtering through those trees differently and we can get more color and dimension while still having that gorgeous open-shade look.
It's probably one of my favorite little pockets on the property.
The Front of the Barn Is SO Good for Photos
The front of The Barn at Loon Cove is another spot I find myself using over and over.
It's beautiful for a wedding dress photo, but it also gives me a great location for groom portraits before the ceremony.
That's something people don't necessarily think about when touring a wedding venue, but as your photographer I'm always looking for locations where I can create beautiful images while also keeping the timeline moving.
The barn gives me several of those options without needing to take everyone somewhere completely different.
A Maine Barn Wedding That Doesn't Feel Dark
If you've toured a lot of barn wedding venues in Maine, you've probably noticed that barns can get DARK.
Loon Cove is different.
There is beautiful filtered light coming into the barn, with doors around the space that can provide additional light and airflow.
It doesn't have that dark, stuffy feeling that can sometimes come with a traditional barn reception space.
There's also a loft, which gives me the opportunity to completely change my perspective.
Sometimes the moment calls for being right in the middle of everything.
Other times, getting above the reception and photographing the entire scene tells the story better.
Having both options is something I really appreciate as a wedding photographer.
The New Deck Gives Couples Even More Space
The deck has made this part of the venue incredibly spacious.
And that's something else I've noticed about Loon Cove: they're not stagnant.
I spoke with Breanna Whiting, one of the owners and a day-of coordinator at the venue, about how relatively young the venue is. What they've accomplished with the property in that amount of time is impressive.
I've photographed at venues that have been operating much longer and haven't had the landscaping, views or thoughtful updates that Loon Cove already has. And they're still going. There are little landscaping details throughout the property that you might walk past without really noticing but put them behind a bride and groom and suddenly they become part of a beautiful photograph.
And if you're having a spring wedding? The lilacs smell freaking amazing.
The Ceremony Space at The Barn at Loon Cove
The ceremony location I've photographed here sits in an open field with a tree line and water behind the altar.
It works whether you're planning something intimate or filling those chairs with everyone you know.
From a photography perspective, I particularly appreciate that tree line.
When I'm photographing toward an altar, I'm also thinking about what's happening behind my couple. Having trees in the background gives me something rich and natural rather than an empty, blown-out sky.
On a bright sunny day, the ceremony field itself can have strong light. That's something I already know when I'm walking into a wedding here. My photography style is soft and true-to-color, so I'm careful about how I expose and edit those images to maintain natural skin tones, colors and details without letting that bright afternoon light overwhelm the photograph.
And if Maine gives us an overcast wedding day? Honestly, there isn't really a bad place on the property to take a photo.
And Somehow... Nobody Sees the Bride
I still don't entirely understand how they pull this off. At one wedding, I waited near the ceremony space for the bride to leave the getting-ready suite. Guests were arriving. People were everywhere. I'm waiting.
And somehow... She just magically appeared behind the ceremony wall.
No guests saw her. No accidental pre-ceremony bride sighting. Nothing.
Then, when it was actually time, she came down the aisle. Whatever magic they're performing behind the scenes over there, it's working.
The Bridal Suite
The bridal suite has plenty of room to get ready, along with a good-sized bathroom and a covered porch with a swing.
That porch is a particularly nice touch because the wedding party isn't trapped inside while hair and makeup is happening. You can step outside, get some fresh air and still have privacy.
It also overlooks the property, so the bride can sneak a peek at everything coming together throughout the morning.
If Breanna Is Available as Your Coordinator... Do It
The Barn at Loon Cove offers multiple wedding packages, and some include Breanna's coordination services while others may not. After working with her twice, here's my photographer opinion: If coordination with Bre is an option for your wedding, I highly recommend it.
I've worked alongside a lot of day-of coordinators. Bre has ruined other coordinators for me.
She's somehow always doing something while simultaneously being exactly where I need her.
When I don't need her from a photography standpoint, she's off handling something else. And then the second something comes up? There she is. I've never had to hunt her down.
Who Is The Barn at Loon Cove Perfect For?
If you love the idea of a Maine barn wedding but want something that can feel a little more elevated, I think Loon Cove gives you a really beautiful starting point. The barn doesn't need a ton of decoration to feel finished.
But if your vision is elegant, romantic and elevated, the space gives you a foundation that you can build on as much as you'd like.
You also get variety — barn, trees, waterfront, open fields, landscaped areas and plenty of different backgrounds without leaving the venue. From a photographer's perspective, that's exactly what I want.
