What These Photographs Mean To Me

I was sitting on my couch with my 2-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son. It was just another routine day in our home. No major events, moments, or milestones occurred. I was reading one of my favorite novels, and I heard my son bring out a book of his own from his room. He plucked himself on the couch next to his sister and opened the book as if he had done this exact thing a million times before. I looked over and watched him "read" this book to his sister (which in reality was him describing the images in the book in his own words). My daughter laughed at his silliness, and they continued to turn the pages together.

I looked up for a brief moment towards the dogs cuddling on the dog bed. I scanned the house to see the pillows managed to fall completely off the couch, we had some snack wrappers that made their way to the floor instead of the trash can, and dog toys were scattered all around. I looked up to the wall and made contact with our gorgeous 30x40 family photo taken from our own newborn session after we brought Kendall home.

I look at my son and back over to the wall art. He is no longer a toddler boy. He is now little boy. Growing out of those baby features and into his little boy features. His hair is more coarse and cheeks are a little less round. My daughter has basically changed completely since being a newborn. Her little button nose has grown but looks identical to her brothers. Her hair is now past her shoulders. Blonde and silky, not like the day she was born with dark brown hair like myself.

For a brief moment, I feel sad. So much has happened already and so quickly. My mood changes to gratitude because I have been blessed with the chance to watch these two grow. In that moment, I was more grateful I had those photos done than the day we actually did them. I was reminded why it was so important to me to capture our life moments along the way.

This one image, just one, was able to bring me through so many emotions that ultimately resulted in feeling loved, content, and grateful. I look forward to the future but was reminded once more not to take any time for granted.

Now it's my turn, to do the same for you.
